Letter to Lectors

October 2006

Dear All:

Farewell and thanks to Jerome King, who after several years as a lector, has moved and will no longer be at Saint Thomas.

Although she was not a lector, I sadly feel the loss of Johanna Scannapieco, head of the liturgy coordinators, whom I’m sure many of you have known, along with her husband, Gus. Johanna died suddenly a few weeks ago.

Please note, below and on the contact list, that I have a new home phone number. I have a new home e-mail address, too—so new I don’t know what it is. However, work is always the best e-mail contact for me anyway.

I have placed the Christmas holidays mass signup sheet in the lector notebook in commons. Note about sign-up sheet: Although I have always observed a “first come, first served” protocol for the masses, I encourage people who have read at high holy day or other “high profile” masses in the past year or so to allow others an opportunity to sign up for the Midnight and Christmas Eve vigil masses—usually the most popular. However, I encourage you to sign up for any of the other masses on the schedule. I often have to look for readers for the Christmas Day masses and for the weekends before and after Christmas.

As stated in my last letter, I continue seeking help with keeping the ministry healthy and holy. I have whittled down my bulleted list to emphasize some of the most critical needs. Linda Veit has indicated a willingness to help with training in some capacity, but that function requires probably three people to share the duties.

§ Coordinate training, including:

  • Scheduling, planning, announcing, and conducting training for new lectors (~4 times/year)
  • Scheduling, planning, and announcing training for current lectors (once/year)

§ Coordinate special projects (e.g., the lector banner, SummerFest booth, ministry fairs)

As always, I feel a bit like Martha—sweating details—when I should be more like Mary, sitting and listening at Jesus’ feet. May you all be blessed in preparing the way of the Lord in the Advent and Christmas seasons and throughout the year.
Peace,

Tony Pearson-Clarke
